MotoGP to Introduce €500,000 Minimum Salary for Riders?

MotoGP is said to be close to introduce a €500,000 minimum salary for riders in the premier class. The championship runner hopes that this will close the salary gap between the top and lowest earners.

The news was reported by Motosport.com which says MotoGP Sports Entertainment (formerly known as Dorna) had been discussing this matter with the teams for “some time.” However, the proposal does not include performance-based bonuses.

Should the plan go through, it will cover all full-time riders in the category.

The idea behind a minimum rider salary is to close the gap between the likes of Marc Marquez and Fabio Quartararo, who in recent years have been the sport’s highest earners with salaries that are believed to have exceeded €10 million (around £8.7 million), while some other riders seem to have earn annual salaries of approximately €120,000 (roughly £105,000) or less.

Motosport.com also said that the clause is included in the draft contract between MotoGP Sports Entertainment and teams for 2027-2031.

This change is another part of a huge change for a new era of MotoGP beginning in 2027. The biggest changes include engine capacity being reduced from 1,000cc to 850cc, a ban on ride-height device, and more tightly-regulated aerodynamics. All bikes will also use 100 per cent sustainable fuel.
