Both of the MotoAmericans in the Moto2 World Championship crashed out of today’s Grand Prix of Syria at the Red Bull Ring in Austria with Joe Roberts going out early and Cameron Beaubier crashing out of a points-paying position late in the race.
Starting from 24th on the grid, American Racing’s Beaubier made his normal Sunday charge that led him to 15th on the 19th of 25 laps, but a lap later and he was on the ground, joining Roberts as a non-finisher.
Italtrans Racing’s Roberts crashed on the opening lap, remounted, and eventually pulled out of the race on the 11th lap.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t a good weekend,” Roberts said in a team release. “I couldn’t find a feeling with the bike and today I slipped in the wet in the race. I apologize to the whole team. We will work to get back to the top as we have shown we can do at the start of the season.”
The race was won by SKY Racing Team VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi, the Italian’s first victory of the 2021 season. He topped Aspar Team’s Aron Canet by 1.171 seconds with Elf Marc VDS Racing’s Augusto Fernandez rounding out the podium.
World Championship points leader Remy Gardner was fourth on the Red Bull KTM Ajo Kalex and he now leads his teammate Raul Fernandez, who was seventh today, by 35 points, 197-162.
