Scorpion Optima Motorcycle Jacket Review

The Scorpion Optima jacket is a commuter motorcyclist’s dream — affordable, waterproof, amply ventilated and equipped with a removable thermal liner, the Optima ticks plenty of boxes for daily riders. Outside of the high-viz color options, all colorways include reflective materials on the torso and arms for improved visibility.

Constructed out of lightweight, breathable, waterproof laminated textile fabric, the Optima has a leg up against the competition in that it doesn’t rely on bulky, often uncomfortable waterproof liners — thanks to the laminated fabric and sealed seams. When heading to work during those foggy early mornings or when faced with bad weather, all you need to do is nip-up the rubber-lined zippers and focus on the task ahead.

Two sizeable vents on the chest and two rear exhaust vents allow a great deal of air circulation, which I’ve utilized during our latest Southern California heat wave, while testing the 2020 Kawasaki Z900 ABS. There is ample storage, with two external hip pockets, one waterproof Napoleon wallet pocket, two Velcro-sealed pouches and a media pocket with a headphone wire cutout.

If things go south, the Optima is equipped with CE Level 1 rated armor in the shoulders and elbows; CE Level 2 replacements are available for $26.95 a set. A foam back protector is provided but should be upgraded to the CE Level 2 protector that Scorpion offers for $44.95.

Sturdy YKK zippers are found throughout the Optima, as is a button snap at the fleece-lined collar that prevents chaffing. Where Scorpion could improve is concerning the internal padding. A little more will go a long way for comfort in the joint areas.

At $199.99, the Scorpion Optima jacket offers tons of utility for any motorcyclist and does so on a budget. Match that with a three-year warranty, and you’ve got a winner. Available in sizes S-3XL.
