Roberts Fifth, Beaubier 27th On Opening Day In Jerez

It was an up-and-down day for the two Americans in the Moto2 World Championship on the opening day of practice for Sunday’s Red Bull Grand Prix of Spain. Italtrans Racing’s Joe Roberts had a solid day, ending up fifth fastest after the two sessions. American Racing’s Cameron Beaubier, meanwhile, suffered a crash early in FP2 and only got back out on track with five minutes remaining. He ended the day in 27th overall after completing just seven laps in FP2 with his best time coming in FP1.
Roberts had his best lap in the second session, a 1:41.813 which put him just .296 off the top spot. Beaubier did his 1:42.953 in FP1 with his second session ruined by his early crash. Beaubier is 1.4 seconds from the top.
The opening day at Jerez in Moto2 was led by Brit Sam Lowes, the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team rider turning in a 1:41.515 in FP2 to best Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Remy Gardner and Petronas Sprinta Racing’s Jake Dixon.
The top 10 are separated by just .487 of a second.
