How to clean the helmet: Caberg’s advice

Discover how to clean your helmet in the best way with the Caberg guide.

When we travel by motorcycle, our helmet is exposed to the elements, from the sun to the wind and rain, and any dust that may be in the air.
It is also inevitable that, with use, the helmet comes into contact with our sweat, especially on hot summer days. Sometimes it can finally happen that it is placed on dirty surfaces or, in any case, not properly clean.

For all these reasons, Our helmet requires periodic cleaning and sanitization .

Taking care of your helmet and washing it regularly allows you to keep it beautiful and shiny, just like you just purchased it, but it is also and above all a question of safety.
Indeed, a periodic cleaning allows to:

preserve the external features of the shell,
avoid the proliferation of bacteria on the interiors,
Ensure perfect visibility through the visor.

To properly take care of helmet cleaning, however, it is necessary to follow some small precautions. For this reason, Caberg has decided to offer you a simple and practical guide.
So let’s now discover together all the steps to be taken.

Helmet cleaning: some useful information

Well, let’s begin. As for cleaning, we will have to deal separately with:

visor,
interiors,
Exterior of the helmet.

Let’s start discovering how to properly clean our visor.

How to clean the visor

It is extremely important to keep the helmet visor clean, to always guarantee optimal visibility , which is essential for safety while driving.
For this reason, we will often need to carry out a basic cleaning and, less frequently, a more thorough cleaning.

For the more frequent cleaning is enough to wipe the visor with a soft cloth, toilet paper or cellulose kitchen paper moistened with water . Alternatively, you can use wet wipes , specifically designed for this use.

Periodically, however, it will be necessary to carry out a more thorough cleaning , in order to remove any type of impurity from the visor.
In this case, you will first need to remove the visor from the helmet and remove, when present, the internal Pinlock lens, to avoid damaging it.

At this point, it is possible to remove the most superficial impurities from the visor, using a damp cloth.
We then proceed to clean the visor, both on the inside and the outside, using specific products. These will allow you to degrease it effectively.
If you don’t have specific products, you can use neutral hand soap.

Once the cleaning is complete, we dry the visor with a soft cloth to avoid streaks.

How to clean the interiors of a helmet

The interiors also need to be kept clean. Without regular cleaning, in fact, bacteria can proliferate inside your helmet and cause bad smells.

The Caberg helmetshave removable and washable interiors to allow you to always keep them clean and comfortable.

After removing the internal padding, you can then proceed to washing (read here if you want to find out more about how to proceed).
Remember : cleaning cannot be done in the washing machine, but only by hand.
Proceed, therefore, to:

use water with a temperature not exceeding 30°,
use neutral soap,
Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

So let everything dry, avoiding tumble dryers or direct heat sources.

As an alternative to washing, you can decide to rely on specific spray products for the interiors of helmets . In this case, you will simply need to spray the product onto the fabrics and leave it to work for the recommended time.

How to clean the shell

And now we come to addressing the final aspect of helmet cleaning: the washing of the outer shell.

To do this cleaning, wet a soft cloth in warm water mixed with a little mild soap or a mild detergent . The helmet should never be cleaned with overly aggressive solvents or soaps with too acidic a pH, otherwise you risk damaging it.

Gently clean the outside of the helmet through circular movements and avoid using abrasive sponges that could scratch the surfaces.

Then proceed to rinse, using a cloth dampened with water only, to remove soap residues.

Finally, dry your helmet with a soft cloth or with tissue paper. Avoid using hair dryers or other direct heat devices, which could damage it.

Great, now you’re ready to take care of cleaning your helmet in every aspect. And remember: never underestimate the importance of good maintenance of your helmet , your first ally on the road.
