Beaubier 13th, Roberts 14th On Final Day Of Moto2 Testing In Qatar
Five-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier turned in his fastest lap of the three-day Moto2 test at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar today, the American Racing Team rider’s 1:59.350 vaulting him to 13th in the session and just .695 of a second behind today’s leader Sam Lowes. Beaubier was joined in the top 15 by Italtrans Racing Team’s Joe Roberts, who ended the day 14th after lapping at a best of 1:59.361. Roberts’ best lap of the test, however, was yesterday’s 1:59.245.
Beaubier continued to show improvement throughout the three-day test with his best lap his 20th of 20 go-arounds. The 1:59.350 was .483 of a second faster than his best from yesterday and 1.4 seconds faster than his best on the first day of the test. Beaubier, however, tucked the front on his Kalex and crashed the lap after his best today, but he escaped without injury.
“The team is very happy with the results after these three days of testing,” said team owner Eitan Butbol. “Cameron (Beaubier) was .69 of a second from the top and he improved step by step, learning the bike and obviously the limit.”
Lowe’s 1:58.655 on the Elf Mar VDS Racing Team Kalex bested Marco Bezzecchi’s best by .013 of a second. Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Remy Gardner completed the top three in today’s final session.
The top 10 ended the final session separated by just .550 of a second with the top 20 separated by only 1.003 seconds.
“The three days were important to ride and work with the team,” said Roberts in a team release. “I’m happy to have made progress. We didn’t get the lap time we wanted, missing the last lap because I was expecting to have a clear track while there were a lot of riders. But I’m really happy with the way we’ve worked and what we’re doing I think will pay off in the race.”
